We have a lot of linguistic family jokes around here (usually directed at me, I'm afraid) and one of MY personal favorites is the difficulties the French face with the confusing English pronunciations of desert (i.e. Sahara), dessert (chocolate cake) and the verb desert, which LOOKS like the Sahara but which sounds like chocolate cake. Let's use them in a sentence: Can you imagine a Paris empty of people, completely deserted, with no dessert in the bakery windows, and the Champs Elysées as barren as the Sahara desert? Clever, non? But now, think about first part of the question. Can you imagine an empty Paris? Neither could I. But these short filmmakers could. Chilling. hypocentre -short film- from Claire&Max on Vimeo.
