Still single and living in the New York metropolitan area? Lonely and tired of it? Looking for new ways to meet that special someone?
Why not head to the airport? You might not even need to buy a ticket.
According to this article, Newark Airport (sorry, I'll never get used to calling it "Liberty International"; it's NEWARK for cryin' out loud) is the 3rd-best airport in which to find a date.
#1 and #2? Orlando and Miami. Where they have sunshine, ambiance, beaches, Mickey Mouse and a lot of palm trees. But Newark, THIRD? The 4th and 5th picks were Philly and Beantown, what's up with that, too?
Apparently this all has to do with a new dating site called MeetAtTheAirport.com. Haven't looked at it and don't intend to. But hey, I guess that's as unique a concept as any to try and meet someone new and potentially datable. I mean, as long as the person you're hooking up with doesn't have explosives hidden in their underwear.
I can't help wondering if the only reason Newark made the top 5 was because of all the delays that are a normal fact of life when you're flying out of an airport that is incredibly busy yet actually rather small in terms of runway space and terminals. I mean, at Paris' Charles de Gaulle, I have been in planes that taxied for more than 20 minutes between terminal and take-off or landing (not including time spent waiting in the flight queue on take-off). The taxi time is a result of how much land is devoted to runways here, and it simply takes longer to get the plane from point A to point B. Whereas at Newark there are THREE runways, only TWO of which are long enough for the big planes, and there is simply no available land left in the surrounding area where they could expand, even if they wanted to. Lots of planes + very few runways = Delays.
Hence, if you're flying out of Newark, don't be shocked if your flight is delayed. Be shocked if it's NOT. It's a miracle that they get as many planes out of there roughly on time as it is.
So if you're stuck at Newark Airport because your flight has been delayed, it makes sense that you've got more time to socialize while you're killing time. There is only so much duty-free shopping you can do, right?
Maybe that means Newark isn't necessarily a better (i.e. NICER) place to fly those friendly skies than the other airports. It's just slower and more annoying. Hooking up might be your only option to combat the boredom.
Or, you could just read a book.
