Yesterday, I went out to Pennsylvania to visit my nephew, Steve, who is a freshman at Bloomsburg University; my sister, mom and Steve's girlfriend Angie also came along. It was his last lacrosse game for the season so we decided it was now or never if we wanted to watch him play.
Well, wouldn't you know, the weather wasn't very cooperative. It was pouring rain for 3/4 of the drive, then when we got about 40 miles from Bloomsburg it turned to snow and some sleet... and we passed not one, not two, but FOUR accidents all within a 1-mile stretch, the last one of which involved between 3-5 cars and a car fire. I can't imagine there weren't fatalities in that one, it was awful.
Well, by the time we got to the college we had driven out of the bad weather but not the cold and the grey skies. It was freezing and windy up on the hill (why are colleges always on hills?) so we froze for a while until the team realized their opponents weren't going to show up. Then the boys decided to play a scrimmage game with the Alumni since they had enough people to play.
So in the end, we DID get to watch a little lacrosse action. Steve did quite well, especially since he never played lacrosse at all before last September; he even got a goal, did several of the face-offs and worked really hard (although the mud made the field ultra slippery and he seemed to fall down a lot!)
After the game (which Steve's team won against the alumni), we had to get the car washed because my sister somehow managed to drive her SUV right through the biggest mud pit at the edge of the field. Her husband -- who is slightly compulsive when it comes to his cars and keeping them spotless inside and out -- would have thrown a fit, so while Steve took a shower and hung out with Angie for a while, the rest of us went in search of the local car wash to power-blast the mud and gravel from around the tires and wheel wells. Fun, huh?
After that, a nice dinner (by that time, the sun actually decided to come out), a little shopping at the University Store, a tour around the campus to see how much had changed in 21 years (my sister is an Alumnus) and then home... and fortunately the earlier snow and ice had melted off and the roads were perfectly dry.
I got MY workout yesterday from walking around the campus up and down hills. And diet or no diet, I ENJOYED that hot chocolate I had, to warm up during the game.
